I have moved one step up the age demographic ladder!
I still remember when my older friend and I were discussing which movie we wanted to rent between Unfaithful and American Pie. He wanted to watch the former but my reason to go for the latter was that I didn’t want to see old people’s lives and love affairs. And today…a decade later, I am one of those old people. I asked my students if they wanted to see Sex and the City: The Movie and they said “No Way, those people are SO old!”
For me, after years of spending time with Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha, I just had to see the movie. But…my girl friends here were not really fans of the series so nobody expressed any interest. I had to wait until it came out on DVD…well in Thailand, you don’t have to wait that long.
My instinctual reaction to the movie was, “Wow, they really got older”. Nobody is really going to escape this scary fact of aging. The story itself was cute enough… a bit silly with the she-came-to-NY-to-find-Love and… a bit too melodramatic with the he-couldn’t-come-to-his-wedding-because-he-needed-reassurance. Seriously, how many people in real life really do get left at the altar? These Hollywood people really love their same old drama. I talked to some other people who saw the movie without having seen the series. There were many things that they just didn’t quite get, like why Samantha was the way she was or what the big deal between Mr. Big and Carrie was. I think I appreciated more since I knew their backgrounds.
Anyway I liked it alright but I think it wasn’t because of the movie itself but because of the memories of the series. I was really into them back then and a little sad that the series ended. I had the urge to know about what came next for those gals, what their lives would be, and just the closure. Well…actually…if they produce another movie in 5 or 10 years, I’ll probably watch it too, just out of curiousity.
I remember having Sex and the City nights with my roommates and watching the series together. We cried, laughed and pondered about our love lives. Both my boyfriends back then hated it and thought that it was the most superficial and shallow show ever to brainwash women’s minds. Whatever they said, my girl friends and I still loved it. At some point, all women who watched the show felt like we were the Carrie Bradshaw and our boyfriends were Mr. Big.
So during the past several weeks, I watched the series again and I started to feel a little silly…always the unnecessary drama, always a little bit over the top with the sex talk, and always fabulous lives. I started to wonder why I liked it so much. Maybe it was because these four women were like the girl friends that I never had but wish to have. They talked about everything. They were each other’s safety nets and life support system. Their lifestyles were just entertaining. And sometimes the story shed light on love: the ultimate need in our lives.
Do I still like the story? Well…for entertainment yes, but not as much as I did before. I used to have this little dream that I would ask my husband to watch the whole series with me. Right now I think I can skip that for something else more exciting such as traveling together to a new country.
Maybe I really did move up another step on the age demographic ladder. I started to understand my parents more and more, why they do or think what they do. I guess it’s called growing up. I’m at the point where I feel very secure with myself. I don’t dream about lovers and finding true love. My life consists mostly of work and family. Work gives me headaches sometimes but it also gives me ambition in life. Family is great, no drama. In other words, my life is normal and average just like the next woman’s.
This, however, doesn’t mean that I think it’s boring. I feel perfectly comfortable the way I am. I love that there is no drama so I can use that time to do something else that makes me happier…
Don’t be jealous, folks!
